After encoding our home video we notice on playback that there are lines running vertically evenly accross the screen. They appear lighter in color and are particularly noticable against solid color background. We have tried various filters during this process and have been unable to remove these lines. We believe the lines are caused by the encoding process, since they are not there in the avi file and are still present even when we remove all filters. We are using the lastest version TMPGEnc. We are making mpeg 2 for DVD. Any help in this area would be appreicated.
Thanks.

When you say "on playback" do you mean when playing back the resulting MPEG-2 file? If so, on which software? Or do you mean when playing back the (finsihed) DVD? And, if it's the DVD, did you play it on a PC or on a set-top player?

The lines show up on the MPEG-2 file, viewed with various viewers, and on the DVD, viewed on the PC and on the TV. It turns out the lines are there on the AVI file, the encoder just makes them more visable. The lines appear to be the result of reencoding the DV file after editing.

Your editing program should only recompress parts that have changed. Look for options labelled "recompress" or "preserve data rate" (in the editing software) and make sure they are all turned off.

In any case, DV compression should not introduce any vertical lines (it might "pixelate" the image a bit, if the codec isn't very good). Are you applying any effects to the image in the editing program (ex., resizing it)?
