What is best tool to compress .mpg or .avi

I am trying to write an .avi to DVD5. Using TMPGEnc, but when I use nero to writ ethe fileto DVD, it says that it's too big to fit on DVD5 even if we lower the quality.

So, I ran it thru VirtualDubMod and recompressed it - was 4.7G, now 1.7

Next - back to Nero to author & write DVD - same message. What amI missing when it comes to compressing .avi's or .mpg's (after VDUBMOD) to make them fit on a DVD5??

Many thanks

You cannot put an AVI onto a DVD for playback in a player, only as a data disc.
To play the file it needs to be an MPG file, usual extension is M2V for a video only file.
You then need an authoring app to create the DVD

Nero is taking care of making the mp2. The source file is too large to fit on DVD5 disc when converted to mp2. How can I compress the source?[/list]

You need to use VBR encoding.
How long is the original video?
Also, remember that Nero is not a DVD authoring application, and is probably compressing the file to MPEG-1 and using MPEG audio.
For PAL DVD you will get away with MPEG audio, but it must be MPEG-2 video.
For NTSC, the audio must be PCM or Dolby Digital.

What, exactly, is your source, how big is it and what are you trying to achieve here?

It's about 2 hours long...
I want to burn it onto DVD5 disc in NTSC

File details:
Video -
Codec: DivX5.0 (4cc=DX50/divx
aspect=416x304
bitrate=774kb/s
File length=700 Mb
Frame rate=25 fps (BTW - How come not 29.97???)
Duration=1h48min
Stream type=OpenDML AVI
Intreleave= 2 frames (80ms);p=480 IMRR=1.00

Audio -
Codec=MPEG Layer1
bit rate=124kbps
Fs=48000 Hz

No errors reported in rendering - plays fine in WinMP and Nero's vid player

Sorry, but i thought this was the case.
You have a couple of problems here.
1/. this is a VCD file, ie MPEG-1 and not DVD which is MPEG-2.
2/. you need to convert from what looks suspiciously like a PAL format to NTSC, which means adding in frames.
This is going to remain jerky whatever you do
3/. it's a divX codec, which means it is already compressed and recompressing to MPEG-2 is going to leave artifacts.

Nero is never going to be able to deal with this one.

Does your DVD player support VCD?
If it does, you will be better off burning this to a 700Mb CD-ROM as a VCD, as this is the intended format.

The aspect ratio is all wrong too - for NTSC you need 720 x 480, or for PAL it is 720 x 576.

I honestly believe you ain't gonna be able to do this and keep the quality up at anything reasonable.

IF you're lucky and the file will open in Premiere Pro or After Effects, you may just be able to re export it at the corrct aspect/framerate with the right compression.
Personally, I think you're onto a loser here.
