Hi.

I have seen that there is a type of DVD-R called "Authouring".

Should I use this type to make my DVD master?

What are the differences between an ordinary Maxell DVD-R and an 'authouring' one (apart from the huge price difference)?

Discs labelled "authoring" are for 635 nm laser recorders, while discs labelled "data" or "video" are for 650 nm laser recorders. They are not compatible, so unless you have a 635 nm recorder (unlikely - they're very expensive and very slow), you can't use them.

635 nm recorders (which basically means the first two DVD recorders made - the Pioneer S201 and S202) are able to save bigger sectors, which was supposed to make them more appropriate for authoring "commercial" discs (you could theoretically record the CSS protection directly to the master). But, in practical terms, this was a bit silly, because that could be added by the industrial duplicator, and most duplicators prefer to receive the disc images on magnetic tape or hard drives anyway.
