Hello....im semi-new to digital video and pretty new to everything DVD, but Ive done some homework and played with alot of the best and most poplular apps for everything related to digital video and dvd...but I need help on what Im trying to do right now...

someone please help...

SITUATION...

I wanted to decide what format (VCD, SVCD, or DVD) I should use to burn this particular movie that I have on HDD...So I after playing with alot of authoring apps (Nero, NeroVision, WinDVD Creator, Super DVD Creator, Ulead DVD Movie Factory Disk Creator, Ulead DVD Workshop, Ulead MediaStudio w Video Editor)...and several more simple converter apps (All Video AVI to VCD SVCD DVD, Aare AVI to VCD DVD SVCD, Cucusoft same, TMPGEnc....etc etc)....I DECIDED TO USE TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 to convert the movie to DVD standard, VCD Standard, and SVCD Standard Mpegs....so I could compare the benefits and drawbacks of each...weigh the pro's & cons....compare the difference in quality vs size vs cost of blank media vs compatibility....etc etc.....and I wasnt sure if DVD was overkill for the movie (a good-looking Divx, but not perfect...more source file details below)...you get the idea

So last night, before I went to bed, I opened the source movie in TMPGEnc Plus 2.5....set up the movie to get output in 4 different ways to 4 different mpegs....DVD 4:3, DVD 16:9, SVCD, VCD....set the batch job running and went to bed....expecting to wake up and find the four mpegs having been long completed.....

PROBLEM
That was 13 hours ago....at 4am...it is now 4:50pm....AND TMPGENC IS ONLY HALF WAY THROUGH THE FIRST OF THE FOUR JOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CAN THIS BE POSSIBLE??? OR DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG.....I cannot imagine this length of time being normal....everything seems to be running ok even as I type....preview window looks fine, processor usage is good & high but I can multitask...etc...and the movie is at 69% right now at this moment....after 13 hours!

--------------------------------

DETAILS

Source Movie
------------------------------
File Size = 638 MB
Codec/type = DivX 3 Avi
Runtime = 01:35:39 - 95 Minutes, 39 Seconds (172,008 fr)
Bitrate = 830 kb/s
FrameRate = 29.97
X:Y = 512x272 (1.88:1) [=32:17]
Audio = 1 Stream MP3, 96Kbps, 48ch Stereo, 44100hz

SETTINGS (For all four jobs: DVD, DVD 16:9, SVCD, VCD) IN TMPGEnc Plus were GENERALLY set for highest quality/slowest conversion...pretty much across the board....with 2 pass VBR & compressed VBR audio (not PCM) at 224kbps

EDITING included cropping 3 pixels from left & right edges to eliminate black edge, and the video arranged position "Full Screen, Keep Aspect Ratio"

A COUPLE OF FILTERS like Source, slight video noise reduction, and eliminating the first 6 frames of the movie...starting movie at frame #7

Profile & Level = MP@ML
NTSC Interlaced 4:2:0,
DC precision = 10 bits
Motion Search precision = Highest Quality
Size = standard 720x480, 4:3 display @ same framerate 29.97

GOP & Quantize settings left on defaults....etc

---------------------------------------------
THE ABOVE SETTINGS DESCRIBED ARE FOR THE FIRST JOB OUT OF THE 4 JOBS IN THE BATCH....DVD NTSC 4:3....SINCE THE OTHER JOBS HAVENT EVEN BEEN STARTED YET CUZ THIS JOB IS ONLY 70% THROUGH...SO I DONT KNOW HOW LONG THE OTHERS WILL TAKE....OR IF THEY WILL TAKE NEARLY AS LONG AS THIS ONE.....BUT ALL THE JOBS STUCK TO THE SAME THEME OF HIGHEST QUALITY/SLOWEST....SAME FILTERS...SAME SLIGHT VIDEO CROPPING AND TRIMMED 6 FRAMES FROM MOVIE'S START....ETC....ONLY THE FORMAT-SPECIFIC SETTINGS CHANGED BETWEEN JOBS (VCD, SVCD, DVD 16:9, DVD 4:3)
----------------------------------------------

I Realize that I put a few settings that slow my job down quite a bit....like the 3 filters to slightly adjust video, the audio encoding compression....the 2 pass vbr, the slight cropping, the high quality motion sensing, etc etc....

but 13 hours for 70% of a 95 minute movie STILL seems waaaaay out of hand....

am I wrong???

------------------------------------

what have I done wrong??? is this amount of time for this job normal????

if so, why???

if it ISNT normal, what did I do to make it so long??

I welcome any and all help, answers, recomendations and advice that anyone can offer....please help me on this

if you have any questions about my jobs and my settings that youd like to know so as to help me figure this out, just ask me....i might have forgotten to include an important setting in this thread

thanks,

The Rebel Mind

This seems about right to me- adding in all those filters really takes it's toll on the required time. This is absolutely normal.
You also have to remember that DivX is already a compressed format, so you are compressing compression if you follow my drift.

In my opinion, the MPG audio is a mistake - you cannot use MPG audio for NTSC DVD - it is not supported in the specs. You will need either PCM or Dolby Digital.
What you have to keep in mind is the enormous amount of data that is being worked here.
Multiply your resolutions - 172,000 frames each one 720x480 for 4:3, each frame having 720x480 pixels with RGB & luminance, so that's times another 4!
The resizing/cropping/Noise reduction filters are hammering the system.
I once did a 4 minute video with all the bells & whistles on an old P3 1GHz chip, and it took 2 3/4 hours!!

Maybe you would be better off doing the noise filtering etc. first?

BTW - this same video - 4 minutes long - I ran it through Magic Bullet in After Effects, to simulate real film and used Broadcast spec on output. It took over 15 hours!

Don't worry. These things take time for high quality, although as the source is DivX wether or not it is worth it is another matter altogether.
