There are several slightly different types of AVI files. TMPGEnc has three different "loaders", which you can select in the "Environmental setting" menu, as described in this thread.

Try increasing the priority of "DirectShow reader", and see if the files are loaded correctly. If DirectShow already has the highest priority in your system, try lowering it priority, so that AVI2 is above it.

Sorry for the late response. No, the VBR encode crash does not affect all systems. But on those it does, it has been proven to be the result of DirectX 9.
