How can I add a hallmark to my video? Something that will allow me the flexibility of just having something pop up in the corner for a few seconds... something like that.

I've tried using the "titles" effect in Windows Movie Maker, but WMM seems to distort the video during the section where the title is applied.

I do most of my video editing in DV-AVI, if that helps.

I'm not familiar with WMM, but any video editing program should let you do that. Make sure your project dimensions match the video clip resolution (ex., make sure you're not editing a PAL clip with NTSC settings or vice-versa).

If it turns out to be some unavoidable bug in WMM, try other programs, such as Wax (free):
