Hey all,
Was just trying to capture and when I use 720x480, it looks as if the picture is "widescreened" a bit. Is this proper??? When I record with 640x480 it looks fine. Help?? |

I don't know what kind of hardware you're using to capture, but I suspect that what you're seeing is simply a consequence of the the fact that video "pixels" are not square (while computer pixels are).
NTSC video pixels are slightly taller than they are wide (that's how a 720x480 or 704x480 image can have the correct proportions of 4:3, although 704/480 = 1.467 and 4/3 = 1.333). PAL pixels are exactly the oposite (they are wider than they are tall).
When you play back a DVD on your PC (using PowerDVD, for example), the software will automatically resize the image to keep the original proportions. But if you play the captured file directly (without resizing), it will look slightly stretched or squashed (depending on whether you're using PAL or NTSC).
That's one of the reasons why, if you do any serious editing, you should always use a video monitor for preview, instead of previewing on the PC screen.
Anyway, unless your capture card is very unusual, the clips captured at 720x480 should look correct when played back on a TV.
