I get "the message "not enough memory" when I capture an AVI-DV file to an Mpeg file with TMPgenc.

I have an P4 (2.0 GHZ), 512 MB, and 40 GB free diskspace on one harddisk en 20GB disspace on the other. My virtual memory is at both disks 4096 KB. The temp directory in TMPGenc has been changed in an existing directory.

What do I wrong?

Just a minor correction, TMPGEnc doesn't "capture" anything. It compresses (or encodes) video clips to MPEG (MPEG-1 and MPEG-2).

You don't say which version of Windows you're using, but I'll assume it's Windows 2000 or XP.

Having 4 GB of virtual memory is useless. Windows will not use more than 4 GB in total. That means that, if you have 512 MB, there's no point in having more than 3.5 GB of virtual memory in total. In fact, your problem may be related precisely to the fact that you're telling Windows to use more memory than it can address (32-bit memory addressing is limited to 4 GB, and desktop versions of Windows actually have a per-process limit of 2 GB).

If you're using Windows 98, then anything above 512 MB will cause problems.

Thanx for the answers.

I have Windows XP. Yesterday I tried it again and after 50% TMPGenc gave me another message "could not read video".

I think it's the sort of AVI file I have that TMPGen can not encode.

Now I should try it with another AVI file.

If your AVI file was encoded using a codec such as DivX or Xvid, you need to make a change to TMPGEnc's configuration to be able to read it correctly.

In TMPGEnc's top menu select "Option" and then "Environmental settings". Go to the tab labelled "VFAPI plug-in" and increase the priority of the DirectShow reader so that it's the highest in the list.

Remember to change it back later, or you'll have problems reading some other AVI formats.
